1st Rettendon Brownies

The Brownies have been long established in Rettendon, and during term time the pack meets each Tuesday in Rettendon Primary School, between 6.45 and 8pm.

Brownies are aged 7 to 11 years (though they can start Guides any time between their 10th and 11th birthday).  Being part of ‘girlguiding’ makes being a Brownie very special, as this means they are part of a worldwide association. We have our own website, and a shop and adventure centre in London, near Buckingham Palace. As we can use this centre for sleep-overs it makes an excellent base for visits to London.

Did you know that the Queen is Patron of girlguiding? This means that when Rettendon Brownies and Rainbows visit Buckingham Palace our coach is allowed to drive inside the gates - we feel very special when this happens!

In an effort to keep the interest of young people, Brownies have a fashionable range of casual mix ‘n match uniform. This allows Brownies to have a common identity while maintaining their individuality. They also have their own monthly ‘Brownie’ magazine and a range of special merchandise (look out in Asda for the ‘Brownie’ cake mixes!)

There are ‘girlguiding’ centres throughout the world, and being a Brownie or a Brownie leader doesn’t have to stop at weekly meetings. Last Year, our assistant leader ‘Fox’ (who started out as a Rettendon Brownie) went to Namibia with other youth members of girlguiding. She had a wonderful experience, and similar opportunities are available to everyone involved in girlguiding.

However, Brownies tend to stay closer to home and our annual pack holiday is usually in Essex though we did venture to Norfolk one year. ‘Brownies’ offers a unique experience to girls, as does Rainbows and Guide sections of girlguiding.

We have places for 24 Brownies at Rettendon, and we currently have two guider leaders known as Brown Owl and Willow, as well as Fox. Many of our Brownies stay from 7-11yrs and gain much from their experience as well as having lots of fun.

and 1st Rettendon Rainbows
Rainbows started meeting in Rettendon 10 years ago, are also part of girlguiding. Girls aged 5-7 years are welcome to join, and Rainbows meet before the Brownies, on Tuesdays in the School Hall, between 5.30 and 6.30pm. Rainbows wear a ‘tabard’ and they sometimes meet up with other local Rainbows to take part in fun filled activity days. Sometimes Rettendon Brownies and Rainbows meet to use the swimming pool, or have coach trips and outings. Most Rainbows go on to become a Brownie.
