ALL SAINT’S CHURCH RETTENDON

ALL SAINT’S CHURCH RETTENDON

Rettendon is blessed with an old and beautiful church. It stands on high ground and its tower (c. 1430) commands magnificent views to the south, east and west. It is surrounded by lands and buildings which once belonged to the New England Company. There are features in the church which point to its history. The Piscine (c. 1220) headed by a horse shoe arch is probably the oldest artifact. To the ends of the choir stalls there are some beautiful 15th century carvings one of which depicts the bear and ragged staff, an emblem used by the Earl of Warwick. The connection here may be the Bishop of Ely. Against the east wall of the north aisle there is a fine classical monument carved mainly in Sicilian marble embracing five figures. The monument was commissioned by Edmund Humphrey in memory of his family. He himself died a bachelor in 1727. Other special features of interest are a priest room, a free pardon granted by James 1 to a member of the Humphrey family, some fine brasses and an interesting slab (probably late Norman) carved and inlaid with brass.

The Revd Harvey Reed is the Priest in Charge His address is 93 Ferry Road, Hullbridge, Essex SS5 6EL.
